For this blog we will refer to them as The Lions. When photos are published, you will see why. They are brothers. They are cute and cuddly and 25 lbs large. Kink is the cuddler, Simba, the hunter. Their parents are my cousin-in-law, Kate and cousin Kevin. They are temporarily moving to Alaska to fly people around, cook yummies, and box hungry grizzlies. I've created this blog so KnK can check in on The Lions and see how they are doing.

What Happened to The Lions!?!

Excited to get the lions back soon. I don't allow them to stay outdoors too long in the dark because of the wildlife threats that could be lerking. One positive note is that there are no birds singing at 4:15 am so the boys sleep longer now.

We certainly hope that we can meet you, Kate and Kevin, when you return. It has been a pleasure to have the lions because they are so sweet, loving and mellow. We are sure it is a reflection of their owners. They kind of take after Jason too. Except they don't have that wild streak. Hah! We were first introduced to Simba and Kink in May and we can't believe how quickly the time has passed. We'll let you know when the boys transfer to Jason's again.

Lions Leaving Soon

It's a gorgeous fall day and the boys are lounging on the deck. Simba had a bout of heavy drooling a couple of days ago. I assumed he ate something that disagreed with him...like a critter or bug. He didn't appear to be ill. He just had a lot of drippy drool for a day. I kept a close eye on him and wiped his chin a few times. But he seems to be fine now.

The boys will return to cousin Jason by the middle of October. So every now and then I pick him up for a quick snuggle. Let me tell you, Kink is a load at 24 pounds. I can only carry him for a few minutes but I think he likes it anyway. He makes a little "pig squeal" if I am struggling while picking him up or setting him down.

Kink has a cute little voice and talks when he comes in from outdoors or if he is hungry. He is the first one to jump in bed at night and is eager for a back or belly rub. In the morning he watches me put on my makeup and shares the sink when he is done getting a drink of water. I hope he has enjoyed "summer camp" with us just as much as we have enjoyed him and Simba.

Channel Surfin'

It's officially fall and that means sports all day Sunday for a while. We haven't seen a mouse or mole in about a week now. And we don't have a problem with that. It's nice to see Kink cuddled up on the sofa as the gas fireplace burns nearby. In the meantime, Simba stays busy by checking out closets for potential prey or he lounges on some high perch so he can view our movements around the house. On to the season of wonderful color, crispy leaves and sweet harvest smells.

He's My Brother Lion

There is no doubt that Simba and Kink are brothers and very bonded to one another. Surprisingly, there is no jealousy. When I pet or scratch one of the boys, the other stands aside until his turn comes up. Usually there is no sneaking food from the other brother's dish, but it depends on how hungry they are. Sometimes one of them will hide behind a chair in playful anticipation and pounce at the other guy as he strolls by. Kink initiates grooming sessions by giving Simba a head and face wash. I believe they watch out for each other too. Once in a while I have to break up a fight, but boys (lions) will be boys (lions).

Terms of Endearment

Although their given names are Simba and Kink, I have an assortment of names that I call the lions from time to time. He was outdoors scoping out his next mouse victim when, apparently, he encountered a neighbor dog. Now mind you...this dog is about the same size as Simba...maybe a bit smaller. Anyway, when Simba was eye to eye with this beagle-like hound, he yelped and ran for home. Simba tore through the house like a shot and hid on the deck until the offending trespasser was gone. From what I could see, the dog just wanted to introduce himself. After witnessing Simba's panic attack and retreat to safety, the meek and mild mutt had a puzzled look on his face. Then he continued on his journey through the neighborhood. Now I won't worry too much about the lions taking on animals bigger than rodents.

Goodwill Hunting

Just when I thought the hunting season was winding down, Simba and Kink decided to hold a competition. On Friday we had a total of SEVEN mice, both dead and alive, brought in by the two lions. At the end of the day it was Simba 4, Kink 3. I have no idea what got into them. Maybe it was that new catnip-stuffed lion toy.

Rick suggested that the boys might be catching the same mice they previously brought home since I always catch and release the live ones. In order to test this theory, we talked about putting fingernail polish on the meeses' tails before depositing them back outside and then we would know if we had a return visitor. We can't decide on color....either "Cocktail Waitress Red" or "Pinkini". Speak of the devil....Simba just strolled in with another mouse in his jaws. This one ran under the refrigerator for refuge. If he sees water running, he'll jump to the sink for a drink. He also enjoys lapping up fresh rainwater on the patio table after a downpour. Kate says the boys like to lick up water after someone takes a shower too. It might seem that the lions are not getting enough water around the house. But there are two bowls and their water dispenser located in various places upstairs and downstairs. Kink must be a connoiseur of good H2O. Good thing he doesn't hold out for Perrier.

We had another visit by a live critter this morning. Simba brought in a mouse and dropped him in the kitchen. He ran for cover and Kink helped to chase him out into the open while I trapped him in a cottage cheese container. The mouse was released outside for a potential future encounter with Simba, the hunting machine.

Lion Olympics

If there was an Olympic competition for hunting, Simba would get the gold medal. They both have their favorite chairs and nap spots. Kink is partial to this living room chair and likes to sleep under the guest bed where there is no foot traffic or noise. Simba likes activity and is happy snoozing on a dining room chair where he can see and hear me in the kitchen.

Both lions have a morning jaunt after their breakfasts. I think they have caught at least one varmint each day. The rain does not bother the boys so I always have a towel on hand to wipe them down. Simba brought a "gift" of a dead mouse into the house and dropped it at my feet. At least it was not necessary to chase a live critter around the house. Kink had to inspect the unfortunate prey and gave his brother a lion high-five before I snatched it up and deposited it into the garbage.

Bathroom Break

As I was brushing my teeth this morning, Kink decided to jump up on the vanity for a drink. They seemed to remember everything as if they were just gone for a short time. It didn't take long for Kink to jump into bed with us while Simba surveyed the house for any changes or new smells. Early this morning they went outside to reclaim some of their favorite stakeouts.

I felt a bit sad taking the boys away from Jason last night. They were very content with him. I think Jason will put a "Reserved for Kink" sign on his suede couch as this was where Kink enjoyed being in the center of the social activity. I can imagine Kink watching from his suede seat while Jason and friends yelled at the TV during a sporting event or as they jumped and laughed during a game on the Wii. While Kink was on the couch, Simba was the "coffee-clatch cat" in the Greenwood neighborhood. Simba had no problem inviting himself in to neighbors' homes if they happened to leave a door ajar. Just goes to show you how much these guys like people. And we are happy to have them back for a few more weeks.

Preparing for Lions' Return

I have been gone for over a month visiting relatives and enjoying summer in Michigan. Now we are preparing the house for the Lions' return. We hear that the boys had a wonderful time at Jason's Greenwood neighborhood home...racoons and all. While I was away, I checked the blog regularly to catch up on the latest. I think Jason has a knack for blogging. The slide show, banner picture of the lions and U-Tube insert of "Lion Love" are all amazing.

We travel down to Seattle tonight to load up the boys and bring them back up north. I'll post tomorrow to let you know how the boys react to yet another transition. We are looking forward to their return.

Lion Love

Has anyone seen this video? I opened the back door to investigate the sounds when I saw three Racoons surrounding The Lions.

I started screaming and yelling and scared off two of the raccoons and both cats but the biggest raccoon stood its ground. Now its Man vs. Raccoon. What did I do? Fight it with my bare hands? No. Throw a rock? No. This challenge was not only for the pride and safety of The Lions, but a turf battle. To keep my turf, I did what mankind did to claim America. I went for the bb gun.

Shots one and two missed the raccoon but startled it enough to run off. I then rounded up the lions into the house and closed off the kitty door to the garage and the back door About 20 minutes later, they reappeared in the back yard. I watched them, bb gun locked and loaded, from inside the house. It appears to be a mama raccoon and four cubs. As they ran across the back yard searching for more kitty food to steal, I got a good shot off and hit mama. She stopped, startled, and ran off into the neighbor's yard, cubs closely following.

We won this battle, but I'm sure that's not the last of the raccoons.

Lion vs. Raccoon

I'm cheap. Cat food is not.

This morning I was getting ready for work when Josh, my roommate, excitedly inquired, "Hey Jason, buddy, pal, good morning! May I feed The Lions? Aside from sneezing, it is one of my most favorite activities in all the land."

"Good morning fellow roommate, sir. Yes, you may feed The Lions, but be sure to watch your hand this time. You know how 'bitey' they can be in the morning," I said.

Josh skipped with excitement toward the garage to enter The Lions Den.

I went back to tying my shoes when the back door abruptly opened, causing a breeze to float through the blonde curls on my head.

"Dude, where is the cat food," Josh enquired.

"Uhh, in its usual place, dude. The drawer in the garage next to the kitty bowls," I said.

"I looked there, its gone," Josh said.

Disgruntled, I walked to the garage and looked into the drawer, confirming Josh's discovery.

We walked back toward the house in the back yard, brainstorming on where the bag had walked off to. Were The Lions that hungry? Were we not feeding them enough? Right at that moment, I spotted the dry kitty food bag on the grass in the backyard, with several ripped holes. Not a single morsel of kitty food left.

Rewind to last Saturday, Josh and I were in the living room when we spotted a large raccoon about twice the size of The Lions walk up to my front door, stop, then walk back across the street and into the neighbor's yard.

"Maybe it's spraying to mark it's territory," I said.

"I like raccoons. I think they are cute and cuddly. I want one someday," Josh said.

Turns out the real reason was the raccoon sniffed out a big meal.

Luckily, I had some left over canned kitty food to feed them this morning so they won't ram their heads on our legs when we get home.

The raccoon has struck first, but believe me, The Lions and I will have our revenge. Beware, come to my house, you're stepping on a war zone...and I hope you like Raccoon Soup.

Lions Roar

I worked all weekend tearing down and rebuilding my back yard fence. Matt, Josh R., Josh McD., Amy, and I tore down the fence and dug holes for new posts Saturday. Jessamy made a fantastic lunch for all of us. Simba also got in on the action. Good kitty! Its going to take a couple months (big backyard). Thus, I'm tired and don't have much to say. But I do have some pictures.

Oh, I did find some grey bird feathers scattered on the dining room floor today. No signs of any other bird parts yet. Maybe it will be in my cereal tomorrow morning. I'll keep you updated.

Kink yelling at me to stop scratching up his couch.

New trend: live kitty scarf.

The Lions Return

The Lions were a bit upset after moving from Kitty Heaven to their new temporary home at Angie's home. Lets just say they expressed their frustrations and Angie can't wear those clothes anymore.

After an emotional exchange (...ahem, Angie and Jessamy) The Lions are back living with me. I'm very happy to have them around. Luckily, they know the area well and were able to adapt quickly. I've got the kitty door open on the back door and garage door so they roam freely through the house, backyard, and garage. The only off limits location is Josh's room which of course is the place they want to roll around and spread their dander. I think they do a kitty laugh every time Josh sneezes 26 times in a row. What does a kitty laugh look and sound like? hummm.....

As evidenced by the following photos, Simba is a WSU Cougar fan. Kinks has found another hiding spot behind the baby's bed. Both the cats try to keep there distance from Kahlel...I think he is a little loud for them. But they are all about Karin though he is not quite as fond of them; I think he does have a soft spot for Simba though. I think Kinks might be depressed because he doesn't seem to eat as much as Simba. I have been doing to cups a day as you suggested not the one cup so maybe that has something to do with it. Anyways don't mean to interrupt your party planning for jess.... talk to you later.

Lion Landing

Jason here...

Deb is in the land of strange accents (Michigan) for five weeks, meaning you will have to suffer through Jason's portrayal of The Chubby Lion Chronicles.

Jessamy and I delivered The Lions to Angie's beautiful 1930's home in West Seattle. They recently moved in and are still unpacking, making empty boxes great hiding spots for The Lions.

Similar to my first-time Lion Handler anxiety, Angie had a Lost Lion scare on day three. She couldn't find Kink and called Jessamy in a frantic panic (I might be exaggerating for the sake of a good story):

"EEK! I cannot find Kink! Oh dear, I have not seen him for three hours! Jessamy, you are wise beyond your years. Please help!"

Angie sidetracked, "speaking of years, you have a birthday coming soon. I've heard Jason will be doing something very nice for you. He is such a great guy for you, very caring and understanding. And Cute!"

After a brief silent moment that was slightly awkward, Angie got back on topic. "Oh, back to Kink. Please give me guidance so I may reunite with Kink. I miss him dearly!"

Jessamy, an experienced Lion Handler, giggled and calmly explained, "Oh, my poor, sweet cousin, Angie. What ever am I to do with you? Kink loves to hide in inexplicable locations such as Jason's sock drawer (photo in May's post). Dearest cousin, check all the nooks and crannies of your new home and I'm sure you will find Kink in the quickest of time!"

Angie became overwhelmed with hope and inspiration from the advice of her highly intelligent cousin. She immediately hung up the phone and began The Search for The Lion. Within minutes, Jessamy received a call from Angie.

"Oh my dearest cousin! I have found Kink hiding in a moving box! Angie's voice beamed with joy. "You are quite the gem of a cousin, indeed!"

Ok, I'll end the sappy story. I think I could have gone on forever and bored everyone. Anyway, Angie is a VIP and not able to make regular posts/photos to the same frequency as Deb. Instead, Angie will send me emails while she is at work saving lives on boats (Coast Guard) and I'll post them for her. Enjoy!

Moving Day

Yesterday the boys headed south to their new temporary home in West Seattle. Here Rick carries 45 pounds of lion weight to the car. The boys were not too happy about the car ride but they did great. Now they are staying with Angie, Kahlel and Karin. Kahlel is almost 3 years old and loves kitties. So the boys will be entertained. Plus they will have three floors of stairs to run up and down. They saw Jessamy and Jason during the transfer which was comforting to them.

I woke up this morning without two hungry lions to feed. Simba and Kink were a joy to have in the house and it is satisfying to know we kept them nourished, safe and cuddled for KnK. That did not stop Simba from bringing me another chunky live mouse. Good thing I am not afraid of mice. I was at the kitchen sink and turned to find the frightened fur-ball scurrying for shelter with Simba following close behind. In his haste, the mouse ran and fell off the upper floor landing to the stairs below where Simba was poised to pounce. Since I am getting good at catching critters with cottage cheese cartons, I covered the mouse with a carton and then turned him loose outdoors. I don't think Simba realizes that I am the spoiler of all his fun.

The boys' suitcases are packed and ready to go. They will be moving to a new temporary home tomorrow. Jessamy is going to take them to her cousin Angie where they'll stay for about a week until they can return to Jason's. I know Jason will continue the blog. I think the plan is for Simba and Kink to return here after my visit with relatives. These boys have very special personalities and were a joy to cat-sit. We look forward to seeing them again.

Daily Routine

The boys have been here for over six weeks now. They know the neighborhood well and come and go freely all day. They have established a routine...eat around 7 am, followed by a morning stroll, then check back in for a scratch on the head, and back outside. They start their long afternoon naps around 1 pm. After a refreshing 2 or 3-hour snooze, they're back outdoors looking for critters. Simba and Kink are in the house for the night by about 8:30 pm. Simba would stay outside longer if I would let him. Then they're to bed by 10 pm.

Kink stays very close to the house and doesn't wander far. He prefers a plush couch or chair indoors. Simba must have some hound in his genes. Many times he returns home with grass, dirt and maybe some flower pedals in his fur. He has acquired a bit of a smudge on his nose that I've attempted to wipe off without success so far. I'm hoping Kink can remove it when he gives Simba a face wash.

Lions' Itinerary

Yesterday was the warmest day so far this year. Here he is stretching and yawning...a photo opportunity I couldn't resist.

We are planning for the boys' transition to a new temporary home while I am away visiting relatives. It looks like we'll take them to Seattle on July 4th where they'll stay with Jason or Jessamy's cousin Angie for a while. They are very flexible and mellow. So I'm sure they'll adapt fine once again. Then I will be a "Chubby Lions" blog viewer instead of a blog writer. Many of these catches have appeared in the house, living or dead. I would much rather have a bouquet of flowers. But in the lions' eyes, that's what I'm getting. With sunrise at 4:15 am and sunset at 10 pm, the boys have plenty of daylight to hunt. Rick is pleased that the moles have stopped making hills in our lawn and are moving next door.

I think the boys are enjoying "summer camp" with us. Don't worry, Kate. I know these boys will be thrilled to see you and Kevin upon your return. I used to leave our family cat for several weeks each summer. And she was always excited to see me when I came home. She passed away earlier this year just before her 19th birthday. We were blessed to have her for so long.

Super Models

Now we can say that we are "wildlife photographers" with all this experience catching the lions in action on camera. Besides giving them many rubs and hugs, I brush them once or twice a day. They seem to really enjoy it. And they get regular exercise outdoors. I don't believe they have lost or gained weight. Kink is still a chunk to pick up and Simba's belly sways a bit when he walks.

They are being fed Iams dry food along with some Wysong thrown in for shiny coats. As an added treat, I give them a small portion of canned cat food in the evening. I got the idea one night when I opened a can of chili and they almost tripped over themselves trying to get to the kitchen counter. They must have recognized the sound of the top being opened and associated it with cat food.

The boys have three litter boxes setup for their convenience and they always use them...never any accidents. Simba and Kink talk to me throughout the day. They were quiet for the first two weeks of their stay here. But now they do not hesitate to let me know when they want a scratch behind the ears or food in their dishes. They are great house guests. Too bad I can't teach them how to vacuum and clean bathrooms.

Creature Comforts

Kink is always on the lookout for a great nap hideaway. The lions helped us host a long-time college friend and her daughter for the last few days. We had an enjoyable time visiting with Adrienne and Emily, traveling to the San Juan Islands and just kicking back. Kink and Simba were gracious and friendly as is their natures.

The weather is supposed to be lovely this week so the boys will have plenty of time to savor the warm air and scope out new prey. We have always believed our home with acreage on a quiet cul-de-sac is cat heaven. I think Simba and Kink agree.

The Mole - Deja Vu

Guess what. Kink must have discovered a nest of baby moles because he brought another one into the house this morning. For all I know it could have been the same mole that he brought home yesterday because the long-snouted rodent headed straight for that crack between the fireplace hearth and wood floor. I grabbed the mole by the tail and released him into the wild with the possibility of meeting again.

I have been leaving a door open just wide enough for the boys to come in and out of the house at their convenience during daylight hours. However, I may be rethinking that. I certainly don't want any other unscrupulous critters appearing at my feet while I am trying to enjoy my morning cup of coffee. Kink has proven that his hunting abilities are equal to Simba's. Now I just have to figure out how to tell Kink he doesn't need to convince me of that any more.

The Mole

Apparently Kink is tired of Simba getting all the glory for his hunting prowess. So this morning he set out on his walk outdoors and brought back a baby mole....alive! That might not seem like a big deal except that he carried the wiggling mole between his teeth and brought him to me in the house! I was drinking coffee and working on the computer when Kink proudly dropped the frightened mole in front of me. At first I thought he was a mouse, but upon closer examination, I saw his distinctive long snout.

It took about two seconds for the mole to gather his wits, then he took off running. Kink took chase and cornered him in the bathroom as seen in the picture. I closed the door in order to trap him, but the mole squeezed under the door back into the living room. Of course Kink sniffed him out. The mole had found a hiding place in a crevasse between the wood floor and fireplace hearth. I extracted him by the tail and let him loose outside. (Don't tell my husband that I didn't kill him.) All of the excitement wore Kink out. Now he is snoozing, snoring and most likely dreaming of future hunts.

Summer Plans

The boys have settled into a fairly consistent routine. They are wide-eyed and ready to eat around 6:30 a.m. When their bellies are full, they go outside for a morning walk. Kink takes a quick stroll then returns to the house while Simba surveys the property to make sure all is in order. If he happens to come across an unsuspecting mouse along the way, all the better. The weather has been pleasant but cool. Nothing to write home about. We are hoping for some warmer temperatures by July 4th.

I have made plans to visit family in July. And Rick will follow later so we are making arrangements to transfer the lions back to Jason sometime in the coming weeks. When we return, we expect that the boys will head north back to Ferndale. It is good that they are easy-going and flexible. As I have said before, we enjoy having them. And I know I will miss their sweet personalities while I am away.

Happy Father's Day

The lions would like to wish their dad, Kevin, a Happy Father's Day. We're sure they are looking forward to cuddling and sitting on his lap when he returns. Here they are enjoying a leisurely Father's Day nap. (Rick is napping on another couch downstairs.) He entertained us yesterday during nap time with various positions in his quest to achieve ultimate comfort. I'm going to spend the evening with Jessamy, her cousins, and aunt. Even though Rick is not around as much as I am, the boys like him quite a bit. If Kink has a choice between laps, he'll choose Rick's without a second thought. I'm sure the boys, including Rick, will enjoy the evening.

The weather is getting nicer as you can see in the picture. The boys are finally getting some sun. Simba is intrigued by the resident squirrel population. He hasn't made a move on them though. I think he knows how fierce they would be in an encounter. Simba and Kink both stick close to the house and don't wander too far. Their outings are mostly in the morning followed by long afternoon naps indoors on the cushy sofa and chair. However, yesterday they were exploring around the yard when a sudden cloudburst had them running for cover. Simba made it to the house as the rain came pouring down but Kink was nowhere in sight. Simba was concerned and went from window to window looking for his brother. Finally, Kink made a dash for the door where he found a relieved Simba waiting.

Today Kink is not too keen about going outside again while Simba is stalking the neighborhood black squirrel. He even brought home a baby mole from our adjacent grassy field. Kink, on the other hand, growls at the garbage truck when it comes down the lane and then runs to hide. I guess he is the "cowardly lion" but very sweet and loveable. We wouldn't change him.

Lions Venture Outdoors

Today was a milestone day for the boys. After three weeks of being housecats, we gave them the opportunity to go outdoors. When Simba stepped out onto the driveway for the first time, he started to chatter. We could tell he was in his element. It took less than an hour for him to bag his first mouse (see black blob at the bottom of last picture). When Kink saw the trophy mouse, Simba tossed it in the air to show Kink that his hunting skills were still intact.

In preparation for the big day, I applied some flea/tick protection to the back of their necks last night. Needless to say, they were not happy. They gave me the cold shoulder for a while but forgave me eventually.

The first photo of Simba is courtesy of Rick. My husband is the photographic genius in the family as is obvious by this picture. He couldn't resist joining in the fun this morning as Simba and Kink explored the property.

Kink was happy to sniff around a bit but quickly retreated to the house for a quick nap. It was an enjoyable morning watching the boys thoroughly relish their outdoors excursion.

Z-Z-Z-Z-Z-Z-Z-Z-Z

These lions have certainly mastered the art of power napping. Simba likes to stretch out. He may be dreaming about having his belly rubbed. Sometimes Simba opens one eye to make sure he isn't missing anything. Then he returns to his slumber.

Kink loves to soak in the sun while he snoozes. And his naps tend to be longer than his brother's. We're thinking about getting Kink some Breathe Right nasal strips because his snoring is so loud that it rivals the noise from the neighbors' chainsaw as they are trimming their trees.

The Lion(s) in Winter

I think that's the title of a book/movie from years ago. Anyway, we have had dismal weather so far in June. It feels like winter. The boys don't seem to mind though. They go out on the deck rain or shine. I keep a towel handy so we can wipe them down when they come in. There's a black squirrel they like to watch along with the many birds who delight in antagonizing while perched in the wisteria.

The boys have the run of the house most of the time. Although we have KnK's blessing to let them outside, I think I would worry if they decided to stay outside for a night. If a particularly nice day comes along, I may take them out with me while I do lawn work.

Kings of the Jungle (House)

No. Simba is not waiting for his dinner to be served at the table. However, this morning, they discovered that they can jump up on the railing and get a better view. I grabbed Kink as he was teetering while trying to balance himself. My concern is that they will either try to jump or may even fall. I am sure this would result in injuries or worse. Rick and I will see if we can rig some sort of barrier on the deck so they can't jump. If this is not effective, we need to come up with an alternative.

Question to KnK......
The boys have been here for over two weeks now. Would you feel comfortable with us letting them go outside during the day? We would make sure they are inside to sleep each night.
There are a couple of cats in the neighborhood and a dog that goes outside sometimes with supervision. We have seen racoons and coyotes infrequently but they are around. We would do our best to keep an eye on the boys but can't stop them from roaming. We are on a deadend lane with no traffic so that's not an issue unless they decided to wander off toward the main road. Just let us know what you prefer. Our goal is to keep Simba and Kink safe but not confined inside on nice days.

Simba the Hunter

Now that Simba has conquered the rug population in our house, he started stalking the refrigerator! Simba discovered that the water pipe behind the refrigerator moves when the icemaker operates....obviously a menace he needs to control. So he lays on the floor close enough to the back of the refrigerator in order to spot any suspicious activity. I don't think he's going to outmatch the refrigerator though. And luckily, he is too large (chubby per Jason) to fit behind the refrigerator so we are not too concerned that he will disconnect anything.

Rick and I were watching an older movie last night called "Secondhand Lion". I don't know if any of you remember the film, but it was a moving story about a emotionally neglected boy who ends up staying with his crazy uncles. They get him an old and tired lion as a pet. And they bought a bunch of "Purina Lion Chow" to feed the poor animal. These lions are doing fine on conventional cat food. I bought them some good "Iams" indoor cat and hairball control food. I'm also mixing in some high quality "Wysong" to make their coats shiny.

Play Time

The lions were full of energy this morning. They wrestled with rugs and each other. Simba ended up in a time out on the deck for a while because he was getting so wound up. Rick said if we allowed that, it wouldn't be long before I have a cat (lion) on my head when I wake up. Well...his prophecy came true this morning. I awoke to find Kink on my pillow above my head. (Not much room for me.)

Both Simba and Kink are not bed hogs and usually camp out at the end of the bed. However, I think Kink had enough of me sleeping longer than his hunger pangs would tolerate. They are very good boys. I am surprised at how affectionate they are...particularly to us strangers.

Also, thanks for your comments to our blogging. I didn't realize the boys were such celebrities. He loves to attack and wrestle with the various rugs we have scattered across the wood floor. There is no rug too big or small for him to tackle. It is very entertaining to watch him roll around under a rug, with the rug wrapped around his body and between his paws.

Kink had a long and leisurely nap in the sun yesterday further reinforcing his lion heritage. We may have to take him for some sleep apnea treatments though because his snoring was very loud. He seemed to be content and his brother waited for him to wake up before they started the playful wrestling matches and chasing sessions that are now part of their daily routine.

Dog days

As they were sunbathing on their deck perch, the Lions spotted the neighbor dog for the first time since their arrival. Needless to say, Simba was very interested in watching the dog retrieve frisbee tosses from his owner. But Kink just growled and then ran to hide under the bed. Otherwise not much activity today. I think the boys (lions) are content. They like to have their bellies rubbed and enjoy an occassional cuddle on our laps. They are very mellow and friendly. I am sure this is a reflection of the love and care they got from their mom & dad, K&K.

Secret hiding place

Each morning Kink disappears for a while to take a quiet cat nap. It is nap time now. They are both snoozing soundly on cushy chairs. We are still trying to adapt to their wakeup schedule. It seems that sunrise is their desired wake up time. That means about 4:25 a.m. We experiment each night with rigging the downstairs door so they can't scratch or dig into the carpet in their attempts to open the door. I think we will eventually figure out a mutually agreeable arrangement.

They are "sweet boys" as Jessamy would say. They offer plenty of affection to us and each other. Yesterday Kink washed Simba's faced and hugged him for about 10 minutes. It was so cute. I didn't think Simba was a "lap kitty" (lion) until he jumped on my lap this morning while I was on the computer. What a treat.

We know they would be thrilled to go outside without limitations. We will wait for at least another week to ten days and get Jason's OK before we turn them loose into the yard.

Rick & Kink getting acquainted 5/19/08

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_E-2LzlIRYWY/SDNDVDcNtBI/AAAAAAAAAAQ/WqLQQRViFtk/s320/RicknKink+1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5202576023523013650" />

Day 3 in Ferndale

The lions are adapting quickly to their temporary home here in the small little town of Ferndale. We think they like the quiet deadend lane location with bunches of birds to watch. Their favorite spot is on the second story deck - rain or shine. We have a towel handy to dry them off when they decide to come back in the house.

I weighed them in today. Kink is 21 pounds while Simba is a svelt 20 pounds. I've considered using them as free weights but I don't want to put my back out. They are wonderful cats and very entertaining.

Jason was correct when he said Kink prefers men. I have a picture of Kink sitting on Rick's lap that I will try to post. If I'm unsuccessful, I'll let Jason post it. On day 2 Kink just hopped up on Rick's lap like he knew him for years.

I will post updates on a daily basis, when possible. Our goal is to keep the Lions healthy, happy and loved until they return home.

The Lions' First Days in Bellingham

[this is an email update from Deb]
Hi Jason;
The cats are doing great. They have been spending a lot of time on the deck and enjoying the birds and outdoors activities. Kink growled when a truck came down the lane then ran in the house and hid under the bed. He's not much of a watchdog. We are still trying to come up with a sleeping arrangement. They figured out how to open the door to the upstairs on Saturday night. So last night Rick put a bungee chord around the handle to make it more difficult for them to open. However, they made attempts throughout the night so we may just have to let them come upstairs. You were right about them liking men. Kink jumped up on Rick's lap last night when he was watching TV. They are good boys and are fun to have. I will take some pictures in the next few days and forward them to you. Take care of that toe.
Deb

The Lions Move North

For two weeks, I was a catsitter for my cousin's two cats, Kink and Simba. For this blog I'll refer to them as The Lions. They are brothers. They are cute and cuddly and large. 25 lbs each! Kink is the cuddler, Simba is the hunter.

Their parents are my cousin-in-law, Kate and cousin Kevin. They are temporarily moving to Alaska to fly people around, catch fish and dodge grizzlies. I've created this blog so KnK can check in on The Lions and see how they are doing.

Day 1: Upon first release into my home, The Lions get a good sniff of the place and find the darkest, snuggest corner to sequester themselves for comfort.

Day 2: I come home from work and The Lions are so well hidden I cannot find them. I decide to put food in the bowl per my cousin's strict diet regimen: feed them each 1/2 cup at 7am and 7pm. They come running.

Day 3: I cannot pry Kink off my lap. I think we might be going steady. I'm beginning to question Kink's sexuality. Jessamy is jealous of the cuddle time we spend together. I cannot pry Simba from the window. He wants to hunt the birdies in my backyard. It seems The Lions have adjusted.

Day 4: Josh, my roommate, unexpectedly discovers through 3,459 sneezes that he is allergic to The Lions. He loves cats, and was excited to pet and cuddle with them, but this new allergy is insurmountable. Not even the strongest generic Claritin knockoff antihistamine can curb his symptoms.

Day 5: Luckily, I am able to find new lion-sitters: Jessamy's parents!

Fast Forward to Day 14: With the approval of Kate, Jessamy and I deliver The Lions to their new temporary home in Bellingham. Jessamy's mother is a cat lover and sadly lost her own cat, who recently passed away after 48 years (this could be exaggerated) of meows. She will be an excellent lion-sitter. She will be emailing me updates and photos and I'll be posting them on this blog for all Lion Lovers to see.
